Chanel Haute Couture Show Spring Summer 2022
Chanel Haute Couture Show Spring Summer 2022
For over 110 years, Chanel has been dressing lovers of high end luxury fashion.
"The feminine side of the constructivists, the girl inside." That's how Chanel's creative director explained her inspiration. This is what shaped the Chanel Haute Couture Spring/Summer Fashion Show for 2022.
The Chanel Haute Couture luxury fashion show is always a highly anticipated event. This year was no exception, as Virginie Viard presented Chanel's latest collection on the runway.

Opening The Show
The show opened with a surprise horseback entrance by Charlotte Casiraghi, Princess Grace Kelly's granddaughter and Princess Caroline of Monaco's daughter.
Charlotte is an ambassador for the House, and a skilled equestrian. Trotting in on horseback, Charlotte wore a sequined black tweed jacket. She proceeded to parade the stage, much to the continued delight of celebrity guests.
Charlotte's fellow ambassador, Margot Robbie, even made a rare public appearance at the show.
The Stage
Grand Palais Éphémère in Paris held the show. For the first time ever, Chanel enlisted a contemporary artist, Xavier Veilhan, to do the staging for one of its runway shows.
Veilhan's sculptures and installations explore the relationship between humans and their environment. His work has been exhibited all over the world. These exhibitions include the Centre Georges Pompidou and The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.
The stage took inspiration from the '20s and '30s. Sand, imitation grass, and constructivist installations featured throughout.
Who is Virginie Viard?
If you aren't familiar with Chanel's existing creative director, Viard has been with Chanel for over 30 years. She worked closely with Karl Lagerfeld for many years before his death in February of 2019.
Lagerfeld was the creative director for Chanel for 35 years, with Viard his protégé for much of that. Lagerfeld is one of the most influential and successful designers in recent history.
Paris Haute Couture week remains one of the most anticipated events of the year. Designers Dior and Valentino debut their collections alongside Chanel. So the most important eyes in fashion are on these designers.
Many touted the show as a success.
Luxury Fashion for Spring and Summer
Many fashion critics have called this season a return to Karl Lagerfeld's looks. Minimalist aesthetic and clean lines were a signature of the former icon.
This translated into a relatively pared down aesthetic for spring/summer. The show also saw matching tweeds, minimalist touches, clean curved peplums and lots of white.
Viard has said "it’s a summer collection, so it’s very fresh, even with a lot of embroideries. I was inspired by the ’20s a little – the feathers, the fringe."
While many of the looks maintain Chanel's signature tweed, there are pops of softer colors. A preference for lighter materials was also present throughout the show.
Perhaps the biggest takeaway, style-wise, was the show's inspiration from the 1920s.
Silhouettes popularized in the 1920s were on full-display in the House's latest collection.
The hemlines of organza and chiffon dresses were the classic '20s style, and even the bridal look had a clear sensibility reminiscent of the 'Roaring 20s'.
